What to Expect When Wearing a Carriere Motion Appliance

Have you made the decision to get braces to straighten your teeth? Or does your child need them? Starting the process off with a Carriere motion appliance may be beneficial! This device can help reduce the amount of time you or your child will need to wear braces. Our orthodontists in Needham, MA, at Glicksman Orthodontics offer these appliances as part of an overall orthodontic treatment plan.

How a Carriere Motion Appliance Works

This device includes attachments and rubber bands to help shift the position of back teeth that aren’t properly aligned. It’s placed on your first canine tooth and first molar on both sides of your mouth, covering about four teeth. This appliance uses pressure to move these teeth, reducing the overall amount of time you’ll need to wear braces.

How Often to Wear Your Appliance

As with aligners, you’ll need to wear your Carriere motion appliance for 20 to 22 hours per day throughout the week. You can expect to use this device for about 6 months before getting braces.

Is It Comfortable to Wear?

It takes some getting used to. You might be slightly uncomfortable when you wear it at first, but you can take over-the-counter pain relievers to ease this soreness. You don’t have to take it out when you brush or floss — but you’ll need to be careful when you’re cleaning the areas around the device.
